I stopped by with a vintage German camera to see the vintage German cars line up before the rally.

This thing was wet and orange.

There was some light rain before the rally. Nice weather for photographing cars.

SAAB lurks in the background.

1967 Beetle. Last year of the “classic” style type 1.

A really nice type 2 pickup was present. Just the right amount of wear to look authentic, without looking ratty.

From my favorite era of beetles.

Heavy duty wipers.

I had to get to work before the start of the “race” but somebody else took a great video of the Le Mans style start using a drone:

Aw, hell, I’ve lived in Austin almost 20 years and I knew nothing about this. I would have loved to come down and photographed it. Is this an annual thing?

It’s an annual event, but it’s kept somewhat in the dark.

OH MY GOSH! I was out in the middle of this, I think. I followed a bunch of these cars down Guadalupe. If anyone saw a dork in a Lancer taking a million cell phone pics of aircooleds, haha—that would be me. I saw a whole bunch get out at Dive? and everything.

I’m sort of in love with that thing. There was another car with a 21??cc badge on it that looked like a total blast, too.

Have I mentioned how badly I want a Type 3? I miss our Bunnywagen LeMons car.

There was a blue squareback for sale for ages by my friend’s house near 16th, but it seems to have moved on now. There’s also a very nice yellow one that never seems to move just a few blocks away.

It may have been raining, but it was still very hot out - sometimes a challenge for carburetors.

The only “project car” that I have permission to pursue, after the ALfa debacle, is a Ghia. Maybe a first gen Mustang ragtop. But I have always always always wanted a pre-’70 Ghia, ever since my very first car, which was a ‘71 Super Beetle.

it’s not that they couldn’t get started. Sometimes it pays to stop and read over the entire rally directions list before embarking. Turtle and Hare kind of thing.

Interesting thanks. I’ve never taken part of a rally before. Do you not get to look at the directions until you’re in the car and ready to go?
